"3 Bands, 3 Songs, 3 Bucks -- every month!"
Recorded during a day-long super session that stretched (for engineer/Hat Madder guitarist & vocalist/Playback drummer Isaac, at least) well into the next two days, this monolithic 3-part blast of indie at its most inventive blurs the lines between bands, as members guest on each others' tracks, playing instruments and singing. Writing, arranging, and impromptu cello-playing (by Nick Merz) took place on an extremely truncated timetable, coercing the bands to make intuitive leaps and to accept serendipitous accidents. The prevailing theme is Ghost Stories, and the prevailing mood is of restrained post-punk and shimmering, all-angles rock tension.
Things kick off with the slow boiling, sweet-yet-creepy "Death Of A Summer" by Narc Out The Reds, which proposes a unique fusion of simmering no wave with 1960s girl pop; before Vol. Three spins into the anthemic choruses and braided keyboard and guitar lines of the Playback's "The Pale" (perhaps their frankest expression of popcraft ever?), concluding with the sonic exclamation point of The Hat Madder's "Like Apparitions," which makes excellent use of Isaac's versatile voice and will very likely have you punching holes in your walls. Or perhaps someone else's walls. Wait, isn't that how the ghosts get inside in the first place?
Recorded and produced by the talented Isaac Vander Schuur in the tiny cracks and small hours of his very active performing schedule, Volume 3 heralds a very rocking summer indeed. We're honored by the intricately-wrought thematic arc and sonic detailing that all three bands brought into this session. All three bands have recordings in the works, and I can't recommend their live shows strongly enough.
Best served with a crisp pale ale or IPA.
